Hubbard Glacier

We left Whittier the evening of August 3 and arrived at Yakutat Bay the afternoon of August 4th.

Hubbard Glacier was a truly beautiful site.  It was still somewhat clean looking (not gray) with lots of blue ice.  The captain got the cruise ship up fairly close and slowly turned the ship around during the hour we were there so everyone got a good view.  The glacier also did a lot of calving while we were there --  a loud boom echoed through the bay each time a chunk of the glacier broke off.

note the site-seeing boat to realize how huge the glacier is

the top surface of the glacier is very rugged looking and quite noticeable are the blue layers of ice

calving seen to the left in the photo
