Black Pottery at San Bartolo Coyotepec

We finished visiting the ruins of Monte Alban about 1 pm on Day 5.  On our way back to Oaxaca we stopped at San Bartolo Coyotepec.  This is a market town just south of Oaxaca City in the Central Valley. The town's artisans are world famous for their black pottery (barro negro).

We were given a demonstration of the process to create the black pottery at one of the factories in town..

Note the shiny black pottery -- the clay turns black after it has been baked.  Then it is polished with a piece of quartz to add the shine

On our way back to the bus, we stopped to shop at a store where they were painting alebrijes , Alebrijes are brightly colored Oaxacan-Mexican folk art sculptures of fantastical creatures.
