Drive to Mexico City

On Day 7 we left at 5:30 am for our drive to Mexico City, stopping for breakfast at 9 am.

Along the way we caught sight of a volcano with snow on the top!!! Our first view of snow this winter!

Popocatepetl is the second highest mountain in Mexico and tops out at 5410 m or 17,749 ft.

As we approached Mexico City about 1:45 pm, our tour guide informed us the population of the metropolitan area is 22,000,000.

Since all the museums would be closing early today and then would be closed the next day, we stopped first to visit the Museum of Anthropology before heading to the hotel.

The Museum is very large and given our limited time there, we were only able to visit 3 galleries: The Maya, The Aztec (Mexica) and the Nayar.

The Maya gallery had an outdoor garden with replica buildings.

At the entrance to the Aztec gallery, we were greeted by this ornate ceremonial bowl.  They placed the heart and blood of the person sacrificed in the bowl as an offering the gods.

No, Bev is not praying! She's trying to read the English description of the history of the ceremonial bowl!

What is this all about? Not sure, but it did attract attention.

We were in a hurry as the museum was closing so we did not get any photos of the Nayar gallery.  But the recreations of the village buildings were similar to those in the Huichol village we visited last year.

We left the museum at 6 pm to go book into the Best Western Majestic Hotel.  Our room looked on to the zocolo directly across from the National Palace. Unfortunately you couldn't see much of the zocolo or buildings around it since there was an exposition of the armed forces.
